The mononuclear phagocyte system (formerly called the reticuloendothelial system) is made up of cells that share a common origin from bone marrow stem cells, circulate briefly as monocytes, and then settle in different tissues where they mature into tissue-specific macrophages, all capable of phagocytosing pathogens, debris, and dead cells.
Four examples of mononuclear phagocytes:
