The only date satisfying both witnesses' bounds (strictly after 17th & before 21st, AND strictly after 19th & before 24th) is the 20th of October.

To find a date common to two "between" statements, take the intersection of the two sets of candidate dates: the range must be strictly greater than the larger lower bound and strictly less than the smaller upper bound.

Given: Pranil's memory: sale occurred after 17th October but before 21st October, i.e. on one of 18,19,2018,19,20. Colleague's memory: sale occurred after 19th October but before 24th October, i.e. on one of 20,21,22,2320,21,22,23.

  1. List Pranil's candidate dates: {18, 19, 20}\{18,\,19,\,20\}.
  2. List the colleague's candidate dates: {20, 21, 22, 23}\{20,\,21,\,22,\,23\}. …
