Mean free path (λ) is the average distance a gas molecule travels freely before it collides with another molecule.

Definition. In a gas, molecules are in constant random motion and frequently collide with one another. Between any two successive collisions, a molecule travels some distance in a straight line at (nearly) constant velocity. Since different molecules — and even the same molecule between different pairs of collisions — travel different distances, we define the mean free path λ as the average of all these free-path distances.

Formula. For a gas with n molecules per unit volume and molecular diameter d, the mean free path is given by:

λ = 1 / (√2 π d² n)
