Mean free path (lambda) is the average distance a gas molecule travels freely before colliding with another molecule.

Gas molecules are in constant random motion and frequently collide with one another. Between any two successive collisions, a molecule travels in a straight line for some distance. Since different free paths have different lengths, we define the mean free path as the average of all these free path lengths for a molecule over a large number of collisions.

For an ideal gas of molecular diameter d and number density n (number of molecules per unit volume), the mean free path is given by:

lambda = 1 / (root 2 x pi x d^2 x n)
