Mean free path = the average distance a molecule travels before it collides with another molecule.

In a gas, molecules are in continuous random motion and constantly collide with one another. Between any two successive collisions, a molecule travels some distance in a straight line; this distance varies randomly from one free flight to the next. The MEAN FREE PATH (usually denoted λ) is defined as the average value of these distances travelled by a molecule between successive collisions:

λ = (total distance travelled) / (number of collisions)
