Since v_rms ∝ √T, tripling the absolute temperature multiplies the rms speed by √3, not by 3.

The root-mean-square speed of gas molecules is given by:

v_rms = √(3RT/M)

so v_rms ∝ √T (M and R are constants for a given gas).

If the absolute temperature becomes T' = 3T:

v_rms' / v_rms = √(T'/T) = √3 ≈ 1.732

So the new rms speed is √3 times the original value.
