Mean free path = the average straight-line distance a gas molecule travels between two successive collisions.

In a gas, the molecules are in constant, rapid, random motion and continually collide with one another. Between any two successive collisions, a molecule moves along a straight line with constant velocity, covering some distance called the free path. Different free paths have different lengths.

The mean free path (λ) is defined as the average of these free-path distances, i.e. the average distance travelled by a molecule between two successive collisions.

It is given by:

λ = 1 / (√2 · n · π · d²)
