Because water is densest at 4 degrees Celsius, in freezing weather the bottom of a pond stays at about 4 degrees Celsius (liquid) while ice floats on top, allowing aquatic life to survive.

Anomalous behaviour of water:

Unlike most liquids, water does not expand uniformly on heating. When heated from 0 degrees Celsius, water first CONTRACTS up to 4 degrees Celsius and only then begins to expand. Hence water has its maximum density (minimum volume) at 4 degrees Celsius.

How this helps aquatic animals:

When the temperature of the atmosphere falls in winter, the surface water of a lake or pond cools first. As it cools, it becomes denser and sinks, while warmer water rises. This continues until the whole water reaches 4 degrees Celsius.

On further cooling below 4 degrees Celsius, the surface water becomes LESS dense (anomalous expansion), so it stays on top instead of sinking. It cools further to 0 degrees Celsius and freezes into ice, which is lighter than water and therefore floats.
