Gaps allow the rails to expand on heating without buckling; without them the rails would bend and distort the track.

Metals expand when their temperature increases — this is called linear (thermal) expansion. The increase in length is given by ΔL = L α ΔT, where L is the original length, α is the coefficient of linear expansion of the metal, and ΔT is the rise in temperature.

Railway rails are long metal (steel) bars. During hot weather (summer), the temperature can rise considerably, causing each rail to increase in length.

If the rails were laid end-to-end with no gaps, then on expanding they would push hard against the adjacent rails. Since they cannot increase in length freely, large thermal (compressive) stresses would develop, causing the rails to bend, buckle or get distorted. This would damage the track and could derail trains.
