Water's maximum density at 4 °C makes ice form only at the top of ponds while water below stays near 4 °C, letting aquatic animals survive winter.

Anomalous behaviour of water: Most liquids expand continuously on heating. Water, however, behaves anomalously between 0 °C and 4 °C: when heated from 0 °C to 4 °C it contracts (its volume decreases), and only above 4 °C does it expand. Consequently, water has its minimum volume and maximum density at 4 °C.

How this helps aquatic animals in cold climates: Consider a pond or lake in winter as the air temperature falls.

  • As the surface water cools, it becomes denser and sinks, while warmer water from below rises. This continues until the whole body of water reaches 4 °C.
  • On further cooling below 4 °C, the surface water now becomes less dense (because water expands below 4 °C), so the colder water (between 4 °C and 0 °C) stays at the top and does not sink.
  • Eventually the surface water reaches 0 °C and freezes into ice at the top. Ice, being less dense than water, floats and acts as an insulating layer. …
