Metal expands when heated; a gap between rail sections gives the rails room to expand in hot weather without buckling.

Thermal expansion of solids

When a solid is heated, its constituent particles vibrate more and move slightly farther apart on average, so the solid's length (and volume) increases. For a rod of original length L0L_0 heated through a temperature rise ΔT\Delta T, the increase in length is:

ΔL=L0 α ΔT\Delta L = L_0\,\alpha\,\Delta T

where α\alpha is the coefficient of linear expansion of the material (steel, in the case of rails).

Why the gap is necessary

Railway tracks are exposed to large temperature variations between winter and summer (and even during a single day). If rail sections were laid end-to-end with no gap, the expansion of the steel on a hot day would have nowhere to go — since the rails are fixed at intervals to sleepers, this would build up enormous compressive stress in the rails, causing them to bend, buckle, or bow sideways out of the track ('sun kink'), which is dangerous for running trains.
