Rights without the discharge of these duties cannot make the market fair.
Responsibilities of a Consumer
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 gives the consumer several rights, but these rights are effective only when the consumer also fulfils certain responsibilities:
-
Be aware and informed. A consumer must gather information about the quality, quantity, price and purity of goods and services before buying, and be alert to his rights.
-
Buy standardised goods. Purchase goods carrying quality certification marks such as ISI, Agmark, Hallmark or FPO, which assure quality and safety.
-
Read labels carefully. Check the price, net weight, date of manufacture and expiry, directions for use and warnings printed on the package.
-
Insist on a cash memo / bill. Always ask for and keep the bill, cash memo, warranty or guarantee card, as these are proof of purchase needed to file a complaint.
-
Do not be misled by advertisements. Judge the real quality of a product and do not be carried away by exaggerated or false advertisements and tall claims.
-
Check weights, measures and MRP. Verify the correct weight/measure and ensure the price charged does not exceed the maximum retail price.
-
Make a genuine complaint. Report honestly against defective goods or deficient services and file a complaint for a real grievance; avoid false or exaggerated complaints.
-
Consume safely and protect the environment. Use products safely, follow the instructions, and avoid wastage and practices that harm society and the environment.
