- Steroid hormones — hormones with a steroid (cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene) nucleus, mostly secreted by the gonads and adrenal cortex. Example: Estradiol (a female sex hormone/estrogen, secreted by the ovaries, responsible for development of female secondary sexual characteristics). (Other examples: Progesterone, Testosterone.)
