What are hormones: Hormones are chemical messenger molecules secreted directly into the bloodstream by ductless (endocrine) glands. They travel through the blood to specific target organs/tissues, where they regulate physiological activities such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction, typically in very small (trace) quantities.
Classification with one example each:
(i) Steroid hormones: Derived from cholesterol; lipid-soluble.
- Example: Testosterone (male sex hormone) or Estradiol (a female sex hormone/estrogen); cortisone (adrenal cortex hormone) is another example.
(ii) Polypeptide hormones: Made of amino acids linked as a peptide/protein chain.
