Hormones are chemical messengers, classified by chemical nature into steroid, polypeptide, and amino-acid-derived hormones, each with characteristic examples.

Hormones are chemical messenger molecules secreted directly into the bloodstream by ductless (endocrine) glands, which regulate various physiological activities of the body (growth, metabolism, reproduction, etc.). Based on their chemical structure, hormones can be classified into different groups; three important ones are:

  1. Steroid hormones: these are derivatives of the steroid nucleus (a fused cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene ring system), i.e. they are lipid-soluble hormones structurally related to cholesterol. Example: Estradiol (an estrogen), a female sex hormone responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics; testosterone, the male sex hormone, is another example.
  2. Polypeptide hormones: these are hormones made up of chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds (i.e. they are small proteins/peptides). Example: Insulin, secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas, which regulates blood glucose level (lowers blood sugar by promoting glucose uptake by cells); glucagon and oxytocin are further examples. …
