Hormones are chemical messengers, secreted by ductless (endocrine) glands directly into the bloodstream, that regulate and coordinate the activities of different organs and physiological processes of the body (growth, metabolism, reproduction, etc.). They are required in very small (trace) amounts, and their deficiency or excess causes specific disorders.
Based on their chemical nature, hormones are of the following types:
- Steroid hormones — hormones derived from cholesterol (steroid nucleus). Example: Estradiol (an estrogen, a female sex hormone) — also testosterone (a male sex hormone) and cortisone (adrenal cortex hormone).
- Polypeptide hormones — hormones made up of amino acids joined by peptide bonds, i.e., they are small proteins/peptides. Example: Insulin — secreted by the β-cells of the pancreas; it regulates blood glucose level (its deficiency causes diabetes mellitus). (Glucagon and oxytocin are other examples.) …
