The uncertainty principle sets a fundamental (not instrumental) limit on how precisely two conjugate quantities, e.g. position and momentum, can both be known at once.

Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is a foundational result of quantum mechanics. It states that it is impossible to determine, simultaneously and with arbitrary precision, both the position and the momentum of a particle (such as an electron). If Δx\Delta x is the uncertainty in position and Δp\Delta p the uncertainty in momentum, then:

Δx⋅Δp≥h4π\Delta x \cdot \Delta p \geq \frac{h}{4\pi}
