Cell walls thickened with hemicellulose and pectin (rather than lignin) are the signature of collenchyma, not sclerenchyma, xylem, or meristem.

Different plant tissues thicken their walls with different materials, and this chemistry is a reliable way to identify them:

  • Collenchyma cells are living and deposit extra wall material unevenly, especially at the corners, and this extra material is composed mainly of cellulose together with hemicellulose and pectin — never lignin. This composition is exactly what keeps collenchyma walls flexible while still adding strength, which suits its role of supporting still-growing organs.
