Step 1 – What defines a colloid. A system is colloidal when the size of the dispersed particles lies in the colloidal range, roughly 11 to 10001000 nm (10−910^{-9}–10−610^{-6} m). It is this particle size, not the chemical nature of the substance, that makes something a colloid.

Step 2 – Same substance, different states. A given substance can be a true solution, a colloid, or a suspension depending on the medium and the size to which it is subdivided:

  • NaCl dissolves in water to give a true solution, but dispersed in benzene it forms particles of colloidal size → a colloid.
  • Soap is a normal (true) electrolyte solution at low concentration but forms micelles (colloid) above the CMC.
  • Sulphur, when finely divided in water, gives a colloidal sol though bulk sulphur is a crystalline solid. …
