Eddy currents are swirling induced currents in a solid conductor due to changing flux; used in magnetic braking and induction heating.

Definition: When the magnetic flux linked with a bulk (solid) conductor changes, EMFs are induced that drive circulating loops of current within the body of the conductor. These closed loops of induced current are called eddy currents (Foucault currents). They oppose the flux change (Lenz's law) and dissipate energy as heat.

Two uses:

  1. Electromagnetic braking — eddy currents induced in a moving metal disc/rail oppose the motion, providing smooth braking (used in trains and moving-coil instruments as dead-beat damping). …
