Eddy currents are circulating (loop) currents induced in the bulk of a conductor when the magnetic flux through it changes. While they usually cause unwanted energy loss (e.g. in transformer cores), they are advantageously used in:
- Magnetic braking (electromagnetic brakes) — used in trains and roller-coasters: strong magnets near a moving metal wheel/rail induce eddy currents that oppose the motion (Lenz's law), producing a smooth, wear-free braking force.
- Induction furnace — a high-frequency alternating magnetic field induces large eddy currents in a metal to be melted, and the resulting Joule heating melts the metal without any physical contact — used to melt metals and manufacture alloys.
- Induction motors — the rotating magnetic field of the stator induces eddy currents in the rotor, and the force on these currents drives the rotor. …
