Eddy currents are loop currents induced in the body of a bulk conductor by a changing flux; they are put to use in damping and induction heating.

Eddy currents: When the magnetic flux linked with a bulk piece of conducting material (not just a wire loop) changes with time, circulating currents are induced within the body of the conductor itself, in closed loops resembling eddies in water. By Lenz's law, these currents oppose the change of flux that produces them, and they cause I2RI^2R heating within the conductor.

Applications:
