Eddy currents are loop currents induced inside a solid conductor by a changing magnetic flux (Lenz's law). Though they cause heat loss, they are usefully employed in induction furnaces, electromagnetic braking, dead-beat galvanometers, induction motors and speedometers.

What is an eddy current?

When the magnetic flux linked with a bulk (solid) piece of conductor changes — for example when the conductor moves in a magnetic field or the field through it varies with time — induced EMFs are set up throughout its volume. These drive closed loops of induced current that swirl within the body of the conductor, resembling eddies (whirlpools) in water; hence they are called eddy currents. Their direction, by Lenz's law, always opposes the change in flux that produces them.

Utilities (useful applications):

  1. Induction furnace — strong eddy currents produce intense heating, used to melt metals.
  2. Electromagnetic (eddy-current) braking — used to stop electric trains smoothly and without friction. …
