Eddy currents are circulating (loop) currents induced within the body of a bulk conductor when the magnetic flux linking it changes. While they cause unwanted energy loss (heating) in devices like transformer cores, several devices deliberately make use of their heating and force effects:
- Electromagnetic braking: in trains and some machinery, a strong electromagnet is brought near a rotating metallic wheel/drum. The eddy currents induced in the wheel oppose the relative motion (by Lenz's law), producing a smooth, contactless braking force without mechanical wear.
- Induction furnace: a high-frequency alternating magnetic field is applied to a metal to be melted. The eddy currents induced in the metal generate large amounts of heat (I²R heating) rapidly enough to melt the metal, used in extracting and purifying metals.
- Magnetic damping (dead-beat galvanometers): the galvanometer's coil is wound on a metallic (often aluminium) frame; as the coil moves, eddy currents induced in the frame oppose its motion, quickly damping out oscillations so the pointer settles at the correct reading almost instantly ('dead-beat'). …
