This is a research-and-reflection activity — the useful approach is to collect real, current news coverage of self-determination demands in India and abroad, and then evaluate each one using the chapter's own framework: what the group's underlying grievance is, what means it has used to press its demand, and whether a democratic, within-the-state solution (rather than separate statehood) might genuinely address it.

When you collect newspaper or magazine clippings about groups demanding self-determination, organise your analysis around the same questions the chapter itself raises. What are the reasons behind the demand — is it primarily about protecting a distinct language, religion or culture (a "common political identity" claim), about a shared homeland or territory, about a sense of separate continuing history, or about a felt lack of genuine political voice or representation within the existing state? What strategies has the group used — constitutional and democratic methods (elections, negotiation, litigation), or violent and unconstitutional ones — and how has the state it is part of responded (recognition and negotiation, autonomy, or repression)? Whether their claims are 'justified' is genuinely a matter for your own reasoned judgement, weighed against the same considerations the chapter raises about the Basque case — is the group's identity real and distinct, has meaningful autonomy already been offered, and would full separate statehood actually be viable and fair to any minorities within the new state?
