The author's chance meeting with the cheerful scholar Norbu gave him the companion he needed for the kora.

The meeting with Norbu came at the author's lowest point, when Darchen's lack of pilgrims and English speakers had left him stuck. In the small, dark café, Norbu — recognising a fellow book-reader — asked to share the table and struck up a conversation. He turned out to be a Tibetan who worked in Beijing at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in the Institute of Ethnic Literature, and who had written academic papers about the Kailash kora 'for many years' without ever having done it himself.
