The author's physical condition at Darchen was poor. As he lay down to sleep, one nostril was blocked and his chest felt 'strangely heavy'; sitting up cleared his passages instantly, but lying down again filled his sinuses and made his chest feel odd. A 'little voice' warned him that if he fell asleep he 'might never wake up again', so he stayed awake all night, frightened. The next morning Tsetan took him to the Darchen medical college, where a Tibetan doctor felt the veins in his wrist and diagnosed 'a cold and the effects of altitude'.
