Tsetan supported the author with his driving skill, local knowledge and genuine care throughout the journey.

Tsetan's support was constant and vital. As a guide he knew a short cut off the Changtang that led almost straight to Kailash, and he understood the plateau's dangers and customs — walking clockwise round the cairn at the pass, releasing the pressure that built up in the petrol tank at high altitude. As a driver he was remarkably skilful: at the first snow blockage he flung handfuls of dirt across the ice for traction and drove across, and at a second he negotiated his four-wheel-drive vehicle round the snow over major rocks, 'lurching from one obstacle to the next', cutting off a hairpin bend to regain the trail. He was careful of the author's safety and had the punctured tyres repaired at Hor.
