Coffee

Coffee is a tropical plantation crop. The seeds — commonly called beans — are roasted, ground, and used to prepare a beverage. Three varieties exist: arabica, robusta, and liberica. India grows mostly the superior-quality arabica, which is in great demand in the international market.

Despite this, India produces only about 3.17 per cent of the world's coffee. In 2018, it ranked eighth among coffee-producing nations, after Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, Colombia, Honduras, Ethiopia, and Peru.

Coffee is cultivated in the highlands of the Western Ghats, spread across three states:
