Groundnut
Groundnut
Groundnut is a major oilseed crop in India, and the country plays a significant role in its global production. The crop is primarily grown under rainfed conditions in dryland areas, making it an important crop for regions with limited irrigation.
India accounts for about 18.8 per cent of the world's total groundnut production (as of 2018). Within the country, groundnut covers roughly 3.6 per cent of the total cropped area.
Cropping Season and Conditions
Groundnut is largely a rainfed kharif crop, meaning it is sown with the onset of the monsoon and harvested in autumn. However, in southern India, it is also cultivated during the rabi (winter) season. This dual-season cultivation in the south allows farmers to take advantage of different rainfall patterns or residual moisture.
