Gram
Gram is a pulse crop grown in the subtropical climate of India. It is primarily a rainfed crop, sown during the rabi season. The crop is concentrated in the central, western, and northwestern parts of the country. One of its key characteristics is that it requires very little water — just one or two light showers or irrigations are enough for successful cultivation.
The green revolution had a significant impact on gram cultivation. In states like Haryana, Punjab, and northern Rajasthan, gram was displaced from the cropping pattern by wheat. This happened because wheat offered higher yields and better returns under the new high-input agricultural system. As a result, gram's share in the total cropped area of the country has fallen to only about 2.8 per cent. …
