Part (a)
Large-scale manufacturing marks the modern industrial economy, and its main features are:
- Specialisation of skills and methods of production. Under the "craft" method a single worker made a whole article in small numbers; large-scale manufacturing instead uses the mass-production method with a great deal of division of labour, each worker doing one specialised task.
- Mechanisation and automation. Production relies on complex, power-driven machinery, the assembly line, and increasingly automation and robotics, allowing goods to be turned out quickly and in uniform, standardised quality using interchangeable parts.
- Large capital, workforce and output. These industries need enormous capital investment in plant and machinery, employ a large labour force, and produce goods in huge quantities for large national and world markets.
- Complex technology and organisation. They use advanced technology, achieve high productivity, and require sophisticated management and organisation. …
