Density of Population

The capacity of any piece of land to support human life is limited. No matter how fertile or resource-rich a region is, there is always an upper boundary to how many people can live there sustainably. To make sense of this relationship, we need a measure that links the number of people to the size of the land they occupy. That measure is the density of population.

Density of population is defined as the ratio between the number of people living in a region and the area of that region. It tells us how crowded or sparse a place is, on average. The standard unit used to express this is persons per square kilometre.
