Part (a): Buddha taught the Middle Path, Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path; by the first century CE Buddhism had divided into Theravada and Mahayana, developed the Bodhisattva ideal, the Buddha image and stupa worship, and spread across Asia.

Part (b): The Sanchi Stupa's sculpture is magnificent for its four carved toranas depicting Jatakas and the Buddha's life through aniconic symbols, its shalabhanjika bracket figures, and auspicious motifs.

Part (a)

The Buddha's core teachings. After his enlightenment the Buddha preached a practical philosophy centred on ending suffering.

  • The Middle Path avoided both indulgence and extreme asceticism.
  • The Four Noble Truths state that life is marked by suffering (dukkha); that suffering arises from craving (tanha); that it can be ended; and that the Eightfold Path — right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration — leads to that end.
  • He taught impermanence (anicca), no permanent soul (anatta), the law of karma, and liberation (nibbana) attained through ethical conduct and meditation, not ritual.
  • He rejected Vedic sacrifice and the authority of caste, opening his path to all, and used the everyday language of the people.

Development by the first century CE. Buddhism changed and expanded greatly:

  • The community divided broadly into Theravada (the older tradition, the ideal being the arhat) and Mahayana ("the Great Vehicle").
  • Mahayana introduced the Bodhisattva ideal — a compassionate being who postpones nibbana to help others — and venerated the Buddha and Bodhisattvas as objects of devotion.
  • The image of the Buddha in human form first appeared, at Mathura and Gandhara; earlier he had been shown only through symbols.
  • Stupa worship, relic veneration and devotional practices became central. …
