The relationship between India and Bangladesh is one of the most complex and consequential in South Asia. Born from the same liberation struggle in 1971, the two countries share a 4,096-kilometre border, deep cultural and linguistic links, and a common river system. Yet, like any close neighbours, their partnership is a mix of warm cooperation and sharp friction. To understand this dynamic, it helps to look at two clear areas where they work together and two where they remain at odds.
Areas of Cooperation
First, economic and trade ties have grown steadily. Bangladesh is one of India’s largest trading partners in South Asia, and India is a key source of imports for Bangladesh, especially in textiles, machinery, and food grains. The two countries have also worked to improve connectivity — for instance, the Maitree Express train service between Kolkata and Dhaka, and the opening of the Petrapole-Benapole integrated checkpost, have made cross-border movement of goods and people easier. This economic cooperation has been a stabilising force, creating mutual dependence that benefits both sides.
Second, security and counter-terrorism cooperation has been a major area of joint effort. Both nations share intelligence to combat insurgent groups operating along the border, such as those in India’s northeastern states. Bangladesh has taken strong action against anti-India militant groups on its soil, and India has reciprocated by addressing concerns about smuggling and illegal migration. This security partnership has helped reduce cross-border violence and build trust between the two governments.
The Land Boundary Agreement of 2015, which resolved the long-standing issue of enclaves and adverse possessions, is often cited as a landmark achievement in bilateral cooperation. It showed that even difficult territorial disputes could be resolved through dialogue.
