Part (a): Without India's non-alignment the Cold War world would have been more sharply bipolar, robbing new nations of a third path and eroding India's strategic autonomy.

Part (b): India refused the NPT because it was discriminatory, offered no time-bound disarmament, and would have jeopardised India's own security.

Both alternatives flow from a single idea that guided Indian foreign policy after 1947 — the determination of a newly independent, poor and militarily weak country to preserve its freedom of decision in a world splitting into two armed camps. Non-alignment was the vehicle for that independence, and the refusal of the NPT was a test of the same principle.

Part (a)

Non-alignment, as shaped by Jawaharlal Nehru, was not neutrality or isolation. It was an active, positive policy of keeping distance from both the US-led Western bloc and the Soviet-led Eastern bloc, while retaining the freedom to judge each international issue on its own merits.

Imagine that India had abandoned this path. The most likely consequences would have been:

  • Loss of a collective voice for weaker nations. The Non-Aligned Movement (founded at Belgrade in 1961) gave small states bargaining power — they could accept aid from both sides and resist dictation. Without it, they would have become pawns in the superpower contest.
  • Intensified Cold War conflict. With fewer mediators, proxy wars, arms races and crises would have been sharper, and the UN would have been even more paralysed by bloc voting. …
