The question asks you to match historical and political landmarks with specific Indian states. Each clue points to a defining moment in that state's post-independence story, and your task is to connect the event to the geography.
- The State that resisted its merger with the Union of India At independence, most princely states acceded smoothly to India or Pakistan. A handful resisted. The most famous holdout was Hyderabad, ruled by the Nizam, who hoped to remain independent or even accede to Pakistan despite being landlocked deep inside India. The standoff ended in September 1948 when Indian forces launched Operation Polo (also called Police Action) and integrated Hyderabad into the Union. Junagadh and Kashmir also resisted in different ways, but Hyderabad's armed resistance and subsequent military annexation make it the textbook example of a state that "resisted merger."
- The State which was carved out of Assam in 1972 The northeast saw waves of reorganisation driven by ethnic and linguistic demands. In 1972, three new states emerged from Assam: Meghalaya (which had been an autonomous state within Assam since 1970 and became a full state in 1972), Manipur, and Tripura (both upgraded from Union Territories). Meghalaya is the answer here, as it was directly "carved out" of Assam's hill districts to create a homeland for the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes.
- The State where the Communist Party of India formed its Government in 1957 In the 1957 general elections, Kerala made history by electing the world's first freely elected communist government. The Communist Party of India, led by E. M. S. Namboodiripad, won a majority in the state assembly. The government introduced land reforms and education policies but was dismissed by the Centre in 1959 amid political unrest. Kerala remains a landmark in the global story of democratic socialism.
- The State formed in 1966
The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 redrew India's map along linguistic lines, but the Punjab question lingered. Sikh leaders demanded a Punjabi-speaking state. After years of agitation, the government divided Punjab in 1966, creating Haryana (Hindi-speaking) and a smaller, Punjabi-speaking Punjab. Chandigarh became a Union Territory and the shared capital of both states. Haryana is the state "formed in 1966."
Note
Himachal Pradesh also attained full statehood in 1971 (it had been a Union Territory), but the 1966 carve-out from Punjab specifically refers to Haryana.
