Part (a)
The Swatantra Party was founded in 1959 by C. Rajagopalachari, N. G. Ranga and Minoo Masani, mainly as a reaction against the increasingly socialist direction of the Congress under Nehru — the Nagpur Resolution's call for cooperative farming and expanding state control. Four features defined its ideology:
- Free enterprise and a market economy. It argued that growth and prosperity come from individual initiative and private capital, not from the state. It opposed central planning and a large public sector.
- Opposition to the 'licence-permit-quota raj'. It attacked the web of government controls, licences and high taxation as a source of corruption and inefficiency that stifled enterprise, and demanded that the state's role be limited to law and order, infrastructure and protecting property.
- Protection of private property. It treated property rights as fundamental and therefore opposed land-ceiling laws, cooperative farming and the nationalisation of industry, putting it in direct conflict with Congress's redistributive agenda. …
