The question of reorganising India's states along linguistic lines emerged almost immediately after independence. The colonial provinces had been drawn largely for administrative convenience, grouping together populations that spoke different languages and possessed distinct cultural identities. This created friction, particularly in regions where speakers of one language felt dominated by another within the same state.
The demand for a separate Telugu-speaking state had deep roots. Telugu speakers in the Madras Presidency—concentrated in the northern districts—had long felt that their language and interests were subordinated to Tamil, which dominated the administration and public life of the province. After 1947, this demand intensified into a mass movement. Political leaders, writers, and ordinary citizens argued that linguistic identity should form the basis of state boundaries, allowing each community to govern itself in its own language and preserve its cultural heritage.
The turning point came in 1952 when Potti Sriramulu, a Gandhian activist and freedom fighter, began a fast unto death demanding the creation of a separate Andhra state for Telugu speakers. His fast captured the imagination of millions. When Sriramulu died after 58 days, on December 15, 1952, the reaction was immediate and explosive. Protests, strikes, and hartals swept across the Telugu-speaking regions. The intensity of public feeling left the central government with little choice.
Within days, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru announced that a separate state would be formed. On October 1, 1953, Andhra State was officially created by carving out the Telugu-speaking districts from Madras State.
