India, a founding member and major global player, has consistently supported the restructuring of the United Nations, and its stance rests on several grounds. The first is that the UN's structure, framed in 1945, largely reflects the power dynamics of the post-Second World War era and no longer matches the distribution of global power, population or economic influence; large and emerging economies, especially from the Global South, are under-represented in its key decision-making bodies. The second is the demand for expansion of the Security Council in both its permanent and non-permanent categories, with India seeking a permanent seat on the grounds that it is the world's largest democracy, a major economy and one of the largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping. The third is enhanced legitimacy and effectiveness: India argues that a more representative UN would command greater legitimacy and be better able to implement its decisions, whereas a body that fails to adapt risks irrelevance. The fourth is the democratisation of the UN — strengthening the General Assembly and moving away from a system where a few powerful states can unilaterally block action.
