The Constitution of Bangladesh establishes a unitary, secular, and democratic republic with a strong emphasis on nationalism, socialism, and the protection of fundamental rights.

The Constitution of Bangladesh, adopted in 1972, is the supreme law of the country. It was framed in the aftermath of the Liberation War and reflects the ideals of the independence movement. The document is built on four fundamental principles: nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism — often called the four pillars of the state. These principles shape every feature of the constitution, from the structure of government to the rights of citizens.

One of the most distinctive features of the Constitution of Bangladesh is its commitment to secularism. Article 12 of the constitution explicitly states that secularism shall be realised by eliminating communalism, granting freedom of religion, and ensuring that the state does not adopt any religion as its own.
