Part (a): Non-Alignment was justified because it protected India's sovereignty, freed resources for development by drawing aid from both blocs, and made India a voice for peace.

Part (b): India's foreign policy pursued a peaceful world through Panchsheel, support for the UN and peacekeeping, and advocacy of disarmament and anti-colonialism.

At Independence in 1947 India entered a world sharply divided by the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The choices its leaders, above all Jawaharlal Nehru, made in these years set the enduring character of Indian foreign policy: an insistence on independent judgement combined with a commitment to a more peaceful international order.

Part (a)

The policy of Non-Alignment was not neutrality or isolation but an active, independent stance. Three arguments justify it.

Protection of sovereignty and strategic autonomy. Having just emerged from nearly two centuries of colonial rule, India was determined not to surrender its freedom of action. Joining either military bloc would have meant taking sides in conflicts not of its making and letting a superpower shape its choices. Non-Alignment allowed India to judge each international question on its merits and to keep an independent identity in world affairs.

Freedom to concentrate on development. India faced enormous poverty, illiteracy and underdevelopment. Bloc membership would have restricted access to help from the rival camp. By staying non-aligned, India could accept assistance from both sides—Soviet help for public-sector heavy industry such as the Bhilai steel plant, and Western food and economic aid—channelling resources into planned development rather than into an arms race. …
