Russia (the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) was by far the largest, covering over three-quarters of the USSR's land area and containing more than half its population. Ukraine (the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic) was the second most populous republic and a vital agricultural and industrial region.
