Part (a)
The Indian tradition conceptualises intelligence far more broadly than the Western notion of cognitive competence. The Sanskrit word buddhi is the closest term and denotes intelligence as a holistic capacity.
- Buddhi includes not only cognitive competence — knowledge, discrimination (viveka), and understanding — but also non-cognitive elements such as mental effort, determined action, feelings, opinions, values and emotions.
- This gives the notion of Integral Intelligence, which explicitly emphasises the individual's connectivity with the social and environmental world — intelligence is shown in how well one relates to and functions within one's community and surroundings, not merely in individual problem solving.
- Integral Intelligence is expressed through four inter-related competencies:
- Cognitive capacity — sensitivity to context, discrimination, problem solving, and effective communication.
- Social competence — respect for social order, commitment to elders, concern for and cooperation with others.
