Part (a)

Direct/self-report techniques suffer from social desirability — people answer in ways they think are acceptable rather than truthfully. To bypass this and reach the unconscious, projective techniques are used: they present a relatively unstructured or ambiguous stimulus onto which the person projects their unconscious motives, feelings, desires and needs; the responses are interpreted by trained experts and there are no right or wrong answers.

Four effective techniques:

  1. Rorschach Inkblot Test — 10 inkblots (some black-and-white, some coloured) presented one at a time; responses are scored on location, determinants, content and originality to reveal personality dynamics.
  2. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) — ambiguous picture cards about which the person tells a story (past, present, future of the scene); themes reveal underlying needs, motives and conflicts.
  3. Rosenzweig's Picture-Frustration Study (P-F Study) — cartoon-like pictures showing a frustrating situation; the person supplies the reply of a frustrated character, revealing the direction of aggression (extra-, intro- or impunitive). …
