The therapy and its principle
Humanistic-existential therapy encourages the client to seek personal growth and actualise their potential. These therapies postulate that psychological distress arises from feelings of loneliness, alienation, and an inability to find meaning and genuine fulfilment in life. Human beings are motivated by the desire for personal growth and self-actualisation — an innate or inborn force that moves the person to become more complex, balanced and integrated (a sense of being a whole, complete person). When these needs are curbed by society and family, people experience distress. Healing occurs when the client perceives the obstacles to self-actualisation and removes them; the therapist provides a permissive, non-judgmental and accepting atmosphere and is merely a facilitator and guide — it is the client who is responsible for the success of therapy and who initiates self-growth.
Therapies based on this principle
- Existential therapy — Logotherapy (Victor Frankl). Frankl, a psychiatrist and neurologist, propounded Logotherapy (Greek logos = soul; "treatment for the soul"). It stresses meaning making — finding meaning even in life-threatening circumstances. Besides the unconscious repository of instincts, Frankl proposed a spiritual unconscious, the storehouse of love, aesthetic awareness and values. Existential anxiety (neurotic anxiety of spiritual origin) arises from meaninglessness. The therapist is open, shares her/his own feelings and existence, emphasises the here and now, discourages transference, and helps the patient find meaning and responsibility in life. …
