Cognitive distortions are habitual ways of thinking that twist reality in a negative direction; Aaron Beck explained how a childhood-formed core schema (like "I am not wanted") is triggered by a critical incident and produces negative automatic thoughts — for example, a neglected child ridiculed by a teacher comes to think "nobody loves me."

What cognitive distortions are

Cognitive distortions are ways of thinking which are general in nature but which distort the reality in a negative manner. These patterns of thought are called dysfunctional cognitive structures, and they lead to errors of cognition about social reality. Their repeated occurrence leads to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Beck's account of how they develop — with an example

Aaron Beck's theory holds that childhood experiences provided by the family and society develop core schemas (systems that include beliefs and action patterns) in the individual. The process, illustrated with Beck's own example:

  • Formation of the core schema. A client who was neglected by the parents as a child develops the core schema of "I am not wanted."
  • The critical incident. During the course of life a critical incident occurs — the person is publicly ridiculed by the teacher in school.
  • Triggering. This critical incident triggers the core schema of "I am not wanted."
  • Negative automatic thoughts. This leads to the development of negative automatic thoughts — persistent irrational thoughts such as "nobody loves me", "I am ugly", "I am stupid", "I will not succeed", and so on.
  • The distortion. Such negative automatic thoughts are characterised by cognitive distortions; being general in nature, they distort reality in a negative manner.
  • The consequence. Repeated occurrence of these thoughts leads to feelings of anxiety and depression.
