Factors contributing to healing

Techniques adopted by the therapist and their implementation. A major factor is the specific techniques used and how well they are carried out with the client. For example, if the behavioural system and the CBT school are adopted to heal an anxious client, the relaxation procedures and cognitive restructuring largely contribute to the healing.

The therapeutic alliance. The alliance formed between therapist and client has healing properties because of the regular availability of the therapist and the warmth and empathy provided.

Catharsis. At the outset of therapy, while the client is interviewed to understand the problem, s/he unburdens the emotional problems being faced. This process of emotional unburdening is known as catharsis, and it has healing properties.

Non-specific factors. These occur across different systems of psychotherapy, clients and therapists. Some are attributed to the client and some to the therapist:
- Patient variables — motivation for change, expectation of improvement due to treatment, etc.
- Therapist variables — positive nature, absence of unresolved emotional conflicts, presence of good mental health, etc.
(Ethical standards — informed consent, confidentiality, integrity, respect for human rights and dignity, and professional competence — underpin sound practice.)
Alternative therapies
Alternative therapies are so called because they are alternative treatment possibilities to conventional drug treatment or psychotherapy. They include:
