Aptitude vs. interest vs. intelligence
- Aptitude refers to special abilities in a particular field of activity — a combination of characteristics that indicates an individual's capacity to acquire some specific knowledge or skill after training. It is a potentiality.
- Interest is a preference for engaging in one or more particular activities. It tells us what a person likes to do, not what they are capable of doing.
- Intelligence is a general mental ability. Aptitude is narrower and field-specific.
The differences:
- Aptitude vs. interest — a person may be interested in a job or activity but lack the aptitude (potential) for it; conversely, someone may have the potential but no interest. In both cases the outcome is unsatisfactory. For success in a field one needs both aptitude and interest — e.g., a student with high mechanical aptitude and strong interest in engineering is most likely to succeed as a mechanical engineer.
- Aptitude vs. intelligence — intelligence tests assess a general mental ability, whereas aptitude tests assess special potential in a particular area. People of similar intelligence often differ widely in acquiring specific skills, which is exactly what aptitude captures. With proper training, aptitudes can be considerably enhanced.
How aptitude is measured
Aptitude is measured with aptitude tests, available in two forms:
- Independent (specialised) aptitude tests — measure a single area, e.g. Clerical Aptitude, Mechanical Aptitude, Numerical Aptitude, Typing Aptitude. …
