The PASS model (Das, Naglieri & Kirby, 1994) says intellectual activity involves the interdependent functioning of three neurological systems — Arousal/Attention, Simultaneous-Successive (coding), and Planning — that act as the functional units of the brain and operate on a knowledge base.

The model

PASS stands for Planning, Attention-arousal, and Simultaneous-successive processing. According to this model, intellectual activity involves the interdependent functioning of three neurological systems, called the functional units of the brain, responsible respectively for arousal/attention, coding (processing), and planning. Although each unit has its own distinctive function, they are interactive and dynamic — an intellectual task calls on all three.

The three systems

  • Arousal/Attention — a state of arousal is basic to any behaviour, as it helps us attend to stimuli. An optimal level of arousal focuses attention on the relevant aspects of a problem; too much or too little arousal interferes with attention. (For example, being told about a test arouses you to attend to the relevant chapters.)
  • Simultaneous and Successive processing (coding) — information can be integrated into the knowledge system in two ways. Simultaneous processing perceives the relations among concepts and integrates them into a meaningful whole all at once (e.g., grasping the design in Raven's Progressive Matrices). Successive processing takes place when information is remembered and used serially, so that recall of one item leads to the next (e.g., learning digits, alphabets, multiplication tables).
  • Planning — after information is attended to and coded, planning allows us to think of possible courses of action, implement them to reach a goal, evaluate their effectiveness, and modify the plan if it does not work (e.g., setting a study schedule for a test and adjusting it).
